LAKE SUPERIOR — Who would have thought that chili could bring communities together? It has, though, for 25 years it has been one of the Northland’s most anticipated fall events. United Way’s signature anniversary Chili Cook-off returns Thursday, September 15 at the DECC from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Last year, 34 local individuals and organizations competed in the cook-off, including Farley’s, North Shore Scenic Railroad, Arc Northland and JJ Astors. This year, we are hoping all the 2015 winners will be returning to defend their titles. There’s still time to enter your chili. Call United Way’s chili hotline at 218.726.4794. Restaurants, nonprofits, businesses and individuals are welcome to compete as a select group of judges determine who has the best chilies in a variety of categories. The public vote also counts towards the coveted People’s Choice and Spicy Spirit awards. Superior Meats will again be providing 10 pounds of beef, pork, or chicken to the first 20 nonprofit or first-time entrants.
This family friendly event will continue going green in 2016. United Way aims to make the Chili Cook-off a zero-waste event. All products used are recycled. This continues a growing environmentally conscious trend since 2006. United Way has recycled over 13,000 pounds of bowls, spoons, napkins, and waste food.
There is purpose behind the fun and competition of United Way’s Chili Cook-off. The event is the traditional kick-off of United Way’s annual community giving campaign. This year’s theme, Plus You: Together, We Are the Solution, reminds the public that it takes the united efforts of individuals and organizations working with United Way to meet the needs of those in our neighborhoods. United Way’s primary impact areas include meeting basic needs, access to health care, access to education, and promoting income stability.
The Chili Cook-off is a fun and creative way to bring the community together around critical needs supported by United Way. While contestants decorate their booths, use creative ingredients to make their chilies stand above the others, and win awards for best spicy spirit and most innovative theme for team attire, they are supporting the vital work of United Way.
